Sony Just Scheduled the End of Owning Games. Consider This Your 18-Month Warning.

Collectors have been warning about this for a decade and getting called dramatic for it. Then Sony had the first week of July 2026.

The disc line stops in January 2028

On July 1, Sony announced it will stop producing new disc-based PlayStation game releases in January 2028. Industry analysts immediately called it: the PlayStation 6, expected around the end of 2028, is now all but certain to ship digital-only. The backlash was instant — tens of thousands of furious replies within days — and it changes the math for every PlayStation game you'll ever "buy" after that date. From 2028 forward, a new PlayStation game is a license on Sony's servers, full stop.

551 purchased movies, deleted

Starting September 1, 2026, PlayStation users in Europe and the UK will lose 551 movies and shows they paid forTerminator 2, Total Recall, Mulholland Drive among them — because a licensing deal with Studio Canal lapsed. No refunds. Sony's terms are blunt about why: digital purchases don't constitute ownership. US libraries are spared this round, but Germany and Austria went through the same purge in 2022, and PlayStation already stopped selling movies entirely back in 2021. The pattern is not subtle.

Your account isn't forever, either

PlayStation's Terms of Service, updated in April 2026, allow Sony to delete accounts after 36 months of inactivity — one warning email, a six-month window, and then the account and every digital purchase tied to it are gone permanently. Two honest caveats, because we do receipts here: this clause does not currently appear in the US terms, and versions of it have existed since at least 2019. The rule isn't new. What's new is that Sony just made digital the only option — which means the fine print now describes your entire future library.

The pattern

You've heard the meme: "you'll own nothing and be happy." We're not a conspiracy site — we're a receipts site. And the receipts now read like this: you can't buy the disc (2028), the films you bought can be un-bought (September), and the account holding everything has a shelf life if you step away (36 months). Every one of those is a fact with a date on it. Ownership didn't disappear overnight; it's being deprecated — one terms-of-service update at a time.

What collectors should actually do (no panic, just signal)

  1. Buy physical NOW for the games you actually care about — the PS5 generation just became the last complete physical PlayStation library that will ever exist. First-run printings especially.
  2. We called this in January. Our 2026 Field Guide flagged physical PS5 first-runs as a top-five sleeper — that thesis just got a hard deadline. Track the category on our Heat Index.
  3. Movies you love deserve a shelf. Boutique physical — Criterion, Arrow, Vinegar Syndrome, 4K steelbooks — is the only version of your collection no license lapse can touch.
  4. Log into your old accounts. Today. Set a yearly reminder.
  5. Back up your save data locally where the platform allows it.

As always: signals, not appraisals. We don't promise returns — we point at what's moving and show our sources. But when the biggest console maker on earth schedules the end of its own physical media, you don't need an appraisal to read the signal.
