A Torchic just outsold most houses. In 2026, Gold Star Pokémon cards went from binder favorites to seven-figure trophies. Here's what a Gold Star is, the verified record board, and the one signal most buyers miss.
What makes a card a Gold Star
Gold Star cards show a Pokémon in its rare "shiny" coloring, marked with a small star next to its name. English Gold Stars debuted in 2004's EX Team Rocket Returns, with Torchic, Treecko and Mudkip as the set's three starter chases, per ComicBook.com. They were pulled at very low rates, and the gold foil and holo surfaces make Gem Mint copies hard to find.

How fast the floor moved
The jumps are the story. ComicBook.com tracks Torchic's previous PSA 10 record at $25,400 in December 2020, and a PSA 10 Mudkip at $20,400 in December 2024. Both went seven figures in September 2026. Torchic isn't Charizard or Pikachu, either. A population of 19 meant buyers couldn't wait for the next copy.
The signal most buyers miss: the grade gap
Sports Illustrated Collectibles reports a PSA 8.5 Mudkip Gold Star sold for $69,562.80 on Sept. 17. Four days later, a PSA 10 sold for $1,020,000. Same card, about 15x apart.
That gap is the whole game at the top end. These prices belong to Gem Mint, low-population copies. A raw or mid-grade Gold Star doesn't inherit a PSA 10 headline. If someone prices your 8 like a 10 (or tries to sell you one that way), walk.
Before you buy a Gold Star
- Run the cert on PSA or CGC (or our PSA Verify tool) and match the images to the slab.
- Compare grade to grade. Use sales in the exact grade, not the record.
- Check the population. A deeper pop (Pikachu's 119) behaves differently than a pop of 19.
- Pull fresh sales yourself. Records from August may already be stale, and one auction isn't a trend.
AOM signal: Six Gold Stars cleared six figures in about two months, and three cleared seven. That's a category repricing, not a single fluke. But it's a Gem Mint story. Mid-grade copies need their own data before you pay up.
