The 30th Celebration preorder market is currently a hall of mirrors: a national retailer asking $170 for a $50 box, pre-order asks at 4x MSRP, and TikTok sellers whispering "last chance" about a set with 25+ products restocking from September through December. This page is the antidote — the confirmed numbers, who's charging what, and the rules that keep your money in your pocket until it's actually worth spending.
Step one: know the MSRP cold

As of July 24: Pokémon Center remains the MSRP anchor when preorder windows open (expect queue + instant sellouts). Big-box (Target, Walmart, Best Buy) typically holds MSRP but staggers preorder windows — these are your patience play. GameStop / EB Games are pricing above MSRP even after public cuts; check the current number before assuming the outrage cycle fixed it. Local game stores often take preorder lists at MSRP or close — this is quietly the best option in the entire market, and they'd love to meet you. Marketplaces (TCGplayer, eBay) are ask-driven right now; fine for singles later, terrible for sealed preorders today.
The five rules
1. Asks are not solds. A $700 listing is not a $700 product. Before paying any premium, check what's actually sold recently — eBay's sold filter and TCGplayer sales history are free. This one habit deletes most collector regret.
2. There is no "last chance" in July. 25+ SKUs ship September through December. The Pokémon Company printed the 25th anniversary set to meet demand, and shelves eventually sat full. Scarcity before launch is a feeling, not a fact.
3. Never pay a preorder premium against an unknown print run. Full reasoning in our signal check — but the short version is: you're taking the downside of a coin flip someone else gets the upside of.
4. Set alerts, don't refresh. Retailer preorder windows open and close in minutes. In-stock alert tools and retailer apps beat manual refreshing every time.
